Annawadi, India
Annawadi, India is a slum located on land owned by the Mumbai airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. The Annawadi people are squatting on the land, being threatened by the airport that the slum will eventually be leveled. The conditions within the slum are very poor as basic health and employment rights are far from being met. Cardiovascular disease is one of the health problems that has become a major problem among the poor, especially since often times Mumbai public hospitals are unwilling to perform operations free of charge as required by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Also, the right prohibiting employment discrimination and the right to protection from unemployment are ignored and unenforced in Annawadi. The basic human rights owed to the people of India, including the poor of Annawadi should be enforced and ensured by the government.
